Boulder Valley School District and the Saint Vrain Valley School District are the first in the nation to receive an award for being leaders in moving towards zero waste.
Both school districts worked to reduce waste through participation in Eco-Cycle's Green Star Schools program.
The steps included waste reduction, recycling and composting at their schools.
Schools reduced waste by up to one third by participating in large scale composting including food waste, non recyclable paper (such as paper towels from the kitchen, cafeteria, classrooms, offices, and bathrooms.
