Boulder’s annual Polar Plunge is a fundraising event which has been managed by the American Cancer Society most recently. The timing of the event was moved from new year’s day to Jan 7th and now will be moved back again in 2018 to Jan 1st much to the pleasure of participants.
Boulder Community Health (the name of our local Boulder Hospital) is a co-sponsor of the event. According to recent numbers, about 500 people show up, and about half of those hit the icy water at at temperature of just barely under 40 degrees. (Last January it was 38 degrees!)
The event raised over $17k after expenses previously and teams have already been signing up for the next plunge with a new goal to raise $21k.
The money raised goes to cancer research programs at CU and the Anschutz Medical Center in Aurora. These outfits assist people all over the front range area including transportation, free wigs, treatment and sometimes lodging if patients need to travel for treatment etc.
Boulder County AIDS Project dropped management of the event in the spring of 2015 and the ACS took over although the event was cancelled in 2016 since the transition didn’t leave enough time for proper planning.
Seems participants and spectators are excited to have this event back.
