It's time to ride! Well, actually many locals ride pretty much throughout the year. Before swinging your leg over and jumping on your favorite two-wheeled pedal pusher, you might want to consider stopping into one of Boulder's excellent bike shops for an important seasonal tune up. Here for you is a list of some of the top bicycle shops to visit and ensure that your bicycle is working properly.
University Bicycles
University Bikes, also locally simply called "U Bikes" is a landmark shop in Boulder founded in the mid 1980's by Doug (Emmo) Emerson. This full-service shop has an incredible selection of new bikes, an excellent service department and is conveniently located in west downtown Boulder at 9th & Pearl. Stop in just to browse the walls and see an amazing collection of classic and vintage bikes.
Full Cycle Bikes
One of Boulder's oldest bike shops Full Cycle still does an excellent job providing service, bikes and accessories. Full Cycle boasts that many of its staff has been on the job with the shop for as much as 10 to 20 years. While it's changed owners a couple times, this remains a solid shop that locals rely on again and again. Full Cycle started in 1982 as a Co-Op in the back of a grocery store on Pearl Street. Opened a location on The Hill in '85, and then on Pearl Street at about 18th St in the mid 2000's. Visit them now at their location at 2355 30th Street in northeast Boulder.
Sports Garage Cycling
Centrally located at 27th & Spruce street Sports Garage continues to get excellent review. Sports Garage Cycling focuses on E-MTB, Gravel and Mountain Bikes. In their own words: "Our passion is helping every rider discover his or her own cycling adventure. Sports Garage is Boulder’s only full-service, high end bike retailer dedicated to alternative surface cycling." Still in the Q-1 Quonset Hut where they originally opened in 1994, they definitely have passion and strongly cover their niche.
Vecchio's Bicicletteria
Originally on east Pearl Street new Pearl and 18th, Vecchio's is now in the Willow Springs shopping center near 28th and Iris. Waterford Precision Cycles, Gunnar Cycles, Moots Cycles, Soulcraft, Ritchey, and Linus are some of the brands at Vecchio's. All of their bikes are built to order, custom fit, custom frames and a la carte components are chosen to give you a very personalized product. They also service bikes of all makes and models from any era. When winter weather keeps you from riding outside, they invite you to check out an indoor cycling class at Fascat Coaching or simply come grab a beer and swap stories at the shop. We generally prefer pilsners or lagers.
The Fix Bike Shop
If you're looking for a shop on the east side of Boulder The Fix Bike Shop might be your ticket. The Fix is another locally owned and operated shop with enthusiastic staff that of course also rides as much as they can themselves. They're into sales, parts, protective gear and service, but one thing they apparently love is giving advice and guidance to riders of all types. Whether it's guidance about equipment, or where the best single track might be found this shop seems to have the bases covered.
With so many bike shops in Boulder, it's hard to select just a few but this is a good starting place. Local Boulder bike shops seem to like to specialize in something whether it's the type of bikes they sell, or how they orient themselves towards their customers. Hopefully this gives you a good place to start in finding the best bike shop for your needs!
